In 2017, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley partnered with the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations (NCUSCR) to send 20 high school students from South Carolina on a Summer Study Tour to Beijing. The Summer Study Tour was funded by a grant from the Chinese Ministry of Education, and aimed to give students an opportunity to learn about China’s culture, history and language.
The NCUSCR is an independent, nonprofit organization that works to improve U.S.-China relations and is supported by the Chinese Communist Party. The NCUSCR works to build people-to-people connections between the two countries, such as hosting exchanges between students, business professionals, and thought leaders.
Governor Haley said the goal of the tour was to give South Carolina students an opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture but, given the NCUSCR’s connections to the CCP, it is also likely that the tour was seen as a way to further foster U.S.-China relations and promote cross-cultural understanding.
